Formal portraits of my brother

Portrait | Suit | Classy

You don’t see my brother rocking a suit every day, thus you have to utilize the chance when he does. Earlier this year he had his confirmation, and we needed some photos of him for a “thank-you” card.

Earlier this year, May to be exact, my brother had his confirmation. After such a ceremony it is normal to send a “thank-you” card to those who attended showing your gratitude for them showing up. We tried to get some photos of him back in May, but the sun was incredibly harsh and there was a lot going on at the scene. I only had my iPhone X with me and tried my best to get some decent shots, but we weren’t quite satisfied with the result.

You can see the best photo down below, which made it to the “thank-you” card. Slight edit using Adobe Lightroom.

Time flew by and we knew we shoot some proper images. Fast forward to December where my brother was going to attend a annual Christmas party at his school. The clothing code was formal and the obvious answer to that was a suit. Perfect chance to snap some photos, right?

“Perfect chance to snap some photos, right?”

The only problem was that we only had 5 minutes to get the photos before he had to leave for the party. We threw him against the wall in my room and aimed a few spotlights at him in hopes of it being a relatively decent setup.

Below you can see the original photo and my edit of it using Adobe Lightroom.

My brother backed up against a wall looking at a bright light and a person with a massive camera.Photographed by Vegar Henriksen using a Canon 5D III with a 16-35mm f/2.8 L II lens.

When I first imported the photos to my computer I wasn’t very impressed. The background was distracting with lines far from straight. The image had a very warm temperature due to the light, and you could really see this on the wall that’s actually white in real life. I totally understood that this would happen when I shot these images, so I was prepared to do some editing.

I threw the photos into Adobe Lightroom and hunted for the best photos. Some photos were out of focus and some had closed eyes and other distractions. I swapped out the yellow wall for a perfectly white background and toned down the yellow cast on my brother. Not very advanced, but it made the image look completely different – as if they were taken in a professional studio!

Below you can see another edit, done exactly the same way as the previous one. Again, edited in Adobe Lightroom.

My brother’s reaction to me telling the most hilarious joke he had ever heard.Photographed by Vegar Henriksen using a Canon 5D III with a 16-35mm f/2.8 L II lens.

Overall I was quite happy with the end result. I’m a tad bummed that many of the initial iPhone photos had to be scrapped, but I do think this one turned out good. I am also very happy with the background swap and color correction on the bedroom photos. All of these three images made it to the “thank-you” card and will be seen by everyone who attended.

Let me know what you think about my photos down below! Make sure to also let me know how I can improve as that is my end goal. Thank you so much for reading!
