Photographing a BMW 320d in the dark

Cars | Night | Cloudy

It is time for yet another installment in the series. No, not the 3 series, but the "in the dark" photography series!

After his Berlingo adventure my friend decided to pick up a BMW 320d to cope with the lack of horsepower. We obviously had to follow the tradition and drive to the iconic outpost where we photographed the other cars. This time it was very cloudy outside and the lights from the car being yellow made this car the most difficult yet to shoot. Not only was it cloudy, but it was also very windy and freezing cold. Of course this did not stop us from getting a few shots, which you clearly can see.

The final images below are slightly edited in Adobe Lightroom.

It wasn't enough that the clouds made this a difficult shoot, but the yellow lights made it even more challenging. These are not faint yellow lights, but they are strong and very vivid. It is a signature BMW thing so you can of have to have them in the photos, but I was luckily able to tune them down a tad in post. They also conveniently match the lights from the city in the background so that creates for a cool effect. The red lights you see is obviously the brake lights and the blue light is actually a massive spotlight on a rooftop pointing up in the sky. I have no idea why it is there or what purpose it serves, but it made for a cool effect on these photos.

Being driven in Northern Norway it is of course covered in snow, making it blend into the environment. I tried to use different angles and focal lengths to vary the shots and I am amazed on how similar the car looks in each one. It is almost like it is the same car. No, but seriously, this car is very recognizable from every angle and all of them looks great. In the images below I attempted to merge two photos to highlight the unique circular headlights, but still keep the car lit up and detailed. The first image is like the ones above, where the headlights are completely blown out. This is very normal on a camera, but can pretty easily be fixed in post if you have a photo that isn't overexposed, which is exactly what the second photo is. The third photo is the result of merging these two photos.

The images are ever so slightly edited in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

I personally think this merge turned out great and I would have loved to do the same on the other photos since the headlights is such an important component of the car. Maybe next time! We then drove to another location on the other end of the city. We had to drive a little gravel road to get there, but it was so worth it due to the cool background and not so harsh lightning. It was however much darker there so I had to push my camera harder and try to get longer exposure photos instead of cranking up the ISO. Here again you will see yet another merge of two photos to highlight the headlights. The first image is both under and overexposed which you can see on the headlights and how dark the car is. The second image is another photo focusing on the headlights and the third photo is the result of the merge. The forth image is also a result of another merge.

The third photo above is by far my favorite photo. It is dark and mysterious and really highlights the unique headlights. When reflecting over the shoot and the photos I am fairly happy with the result. I think the images turned out very good and I know the owner shares that opinion. As I always say, I'm sure way more car shoots are coming in the future! Especially when the summer months creep upon us.

Let me know what you think about my photos down below! Make sure to also let me know how I can improve as that is my end goal. Thank you so much for reading!
